Skills
Skills enable characters to equip and use specific weapon types, armor types, and item types. Each Item type has a unique ability which is unlocked when that type is equipped.
Each character's skills can be viewed by clicking the 'Skills' button beneath their portrait inside the recruit window.
Characters have specific skills available by default, and many can add new skills - enabling use of new item types - through leveling up in the Skill Tree.
Weapon Skills
Weapon skills determine what weapon types a character can use in combat. The abilities which each weapon enables are offensive.

Pistol | Can equip Pistols. Pistol have the special ability Double Shot, which allows firing of two rapid shots in one turn. The shots must be made at separate targets. | ||
Assault Rifle | Can equip Assault Rifles. Assault Rifles have the special ability Burst Fire, which allows targeting multiple adjacent tiles. | ||
Shotgun | Can equip Shotguns. Shotguns have the special ability Blast, which damages all enemies within a cone. | ||
Sniper Rifle | Can equip Sniper Rifles. Sniper Rifles have the special ability Ambush, which fires at any enemy moving inside the ambush area during the next turn. | ||
Disintegrator | Can equip Disintegrators. Disintegrators have the special ability Meltdown, which damages everyone in a straight line until stopped by a wall; the usual range limit does not apply. |
Armor Skills
Armor skills determine what armor types a character can equip. Each of the three categories of armor (Light, Medium and Heavy) also provide an ability when that type of armor is worn.

Medium Armor | Can equip Medium Armor.
Medium Armor enables the special ability Low Profile. When Low Profile is activated, the character receives a temporary Evade boost of 40% that lasts for the current turn and throughout the next enemy turn. |

Heavy Armor | Can equip Heavy Armor.
Heavy Armor enables the special ability Hunker Down. When active, all damage taken taken is is reduced by 75%, lasting for the current turn and throughout the next enemy turn. |
Item Skills
Item skills determine what item types a character can use in combat. The item skill allows the use of that particular item up to twice in combat, though this is also limited by the amount of supplies available in your vehicle. This simply enables use of the item in combat (without providing additional bonuses), although some characters can also learn additional skills that provide bonuses when using the item.
